Most bear species are now either endangered or vulnerable. Because of this, trade in bear products
is restricted by the inter-governmental Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
The continued existence of bear farming threatens wild bears. Despite repeated claims by the bear farming industry that farming bears protects wild bear populations they are yet to produce any evidence of this. By contrast, there is evidence of bears being taken from the wild to be subjected to a life of confinement and pain. Also consumer preference for wild caught products, as demonstrated by a high demand and higher prices for these products, also show that wild and farmed bear products are not substitutable. The continued existence of bear farming threatens wild bears.
